Stewy von Wattenwyl gehört seit Dekaden zur Brambus-Jazz- Familie und hat sowohl solo, mit seinem Trio oder mit der Sängerin Nicole Herzog feine Produktionen abgeliefert, die national und internationale grosse Anerkennung fanden.
Mit der CD IN THE GIANTS GARDEN realisiert von Wattenwyl eine Idee, welche er seit vielen Jahren als Wunschprojekt mit sich herumgetragen hat: Ausschliesslich von Pianisten komponierte Musik neu zusammenfügen.
Musik also von bekannten Tastenkünstlern wie Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock oder Keith Jarrett bis zu heute schon fast vergessenen wie Mal Waldron oder Ray Bryant, eher nicht die Hits sondern die Perlen, welche es nicht ins Great American Songbook geschafft haben.
Dabei sucht und findet das Trio ganz neue Mittel und Wege um jedes Werk im vielartigen und doch kohärenten Strauss zum Leuchten zu bringen. Stilistisch vielseitige Musik aus verschiedenen Epochen also, die irgendwie berührt, sei es durch ihren Groove, ihre lyrische Kraft oder die eigenwilligen Arrangements und Interpretationen des eingespielten Ensembles.

With the CD IN THE GIANTS GARDEN, von Wattenwyl realizes an idea that he has carried around with him as a dream project for many years: Only re-assemble music composed by pianists.
Music from well-known key artists such as Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock or Keith Jarrett to those who are almost forgotten today like Mal Waldron or Ray Bryant, rather not the hits but the pearls that did not make it into the Great American Songbook.
The trio is looking for and finding completely new ways and means to make every work shine in a diverse yet coherent bouquet. Stylistically diverse music from different eras, which touches somehow, be it through its groove, its lyrical power or the idiosyncratic arrangements and interpretations of the well-rehearsed ensemble.

Einmal mehr präsentiert STEWY VON WATTENWYL auf Brambus ein wunderbares Werk, wobei er nebst seinen versierten Begleitern auch wieder auf die Stimme von Nicole Herzog zählen kann, mit welcher er für das Album "Intimacy" auch bereits mit dem SWISS JAZZ AWARD ausgezeichnet wurde.
Als der Berner Pianist Stewy von Wattenwyl vom Thurgauer Konzertveranstalter Stefan Züst angefragt wurde, ob er die Jazzoper Porgy and Bess für eine Kleinformation arrangieren und im Januar 2018 exklusiv aufführen möchte, sagte er begeistert zu. Die professionelle Aufzeichnung der Erstaufführung zeigte sich als Glücksfall. Entstanden ist eine rundum begeisternde Live-Aufnahme, welche George Gershwins wundervolle Musik mehr als 80 Jahre nach ihrer Entstehung in einem bemerkenswert zeitgenössischen Kleid aufblühen lässt.
Dazu tragen die raffinierten Arrangements von Wattenwyl's, welche nebst im Jazz üblichen Instrumenten auch eine Melodica oder eine indische Shruti Box erlebbar machen, ebenso bei wie die grosse Klasse der aufführenden Musiker und Nicole Herzog's ergreifende Stimme.

Once again: the reknown Swiss piano player STEWY VON WATTENWYL offerts a fantastic new release on Brambus, again with contribution of the fine singer Nicole Herzog - with whom his former release "Intimacy" got the Swiss Jazz Award - and with the excellent musicians that surround him while touring.
When Swiss pianist Stewy von Wattenwyl was asked by jazz promoter Stefan Züst if he would like to arrange George Gershwin's jazz opera Porgy and Bess exclusively for a small band and a concert in january 2018 he agreed with enthusiasm. To record this premiere professionally was a wise decision:
It made possible a inspiring live recording that makes flourish George Gershwin's wonderful music more than 80 years after its genesis in a truly contemporary shape.
Von Wattenwyl's subtle arrangements, who introduce beside common Jazz instruments exotic currencies like a melodica and an Indian shruti box, make a contribution to this.

Mit John Coltrane’s „After The Rain“ stellt Stewy von Wattenwyl eine ganz selten gehörte mystische Ballade ins Zentrum seiner neuen CD, mit welcher er in seinem 50. Lebensjahr inne hält und einen Blick auf sein vielseitiges Schaffen als Pianist und Komponist ermöglicht. Da ist einerseits die mehr als ein Jahrzehnt währende fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit mit seinem Trio und dem New Yorker Saxofonisten Eric Alexander, die hier in fünf packenden Live-Takes dokumentiert wird. Andererseits führt von Wattenwyl mit seinem lyrischen Klavierspiel den Zuhörer auch in die Welt des Pops (Michael Jackson’s „She’s Out Of My Life“, „Vol d’automne“) oder mit der bemerkenswerten Eigenkomposition „Otro Mundo“ und einem klagenden Cello in mehr klassische Gefilde. Die ganz unterschiedlichen Instrumentierungen von Solo Piano bis Quintett tragen ebenso wie die hervorragende Audio-Qualität bei zu einem zugleich spannenden wie berührenden Hörerlebnis.

With John Coltrane’s „After The Rain“ Stewy von Wattenwyl places a rarely heard mystical ballad into the heart of his new CD with witch he makes a stopover in his 50th year and allows a view on his versatile oevre as a pianist and composer. On one hand there is the more than a century lasting fruitful collaboration with New York City based saxofonist Eric Alexander which is documented here in five captivating Live-takes. On the other hand von Wattenwyl abducts the listener with his lyrical piano playing also into the word of pop music (Michael Jackson’s „She’s Out Of My Life“, „Vol d’automne“) or with his remarkable original „Otro Mundo“ and a moanful violoncello in more classical regions.
The very differing settings from solo piano to quintet and the brilliant sound quality are responsible for a fascinating and touching listening experience.

Dienda ist ein schöner afrikanischer Frauenname. Kenny Kirkland, der leider viel zu früh verstorbene geniale Pianist des Wynton Marsalis Quartets, betitelte eine seiner schönsten Kompositionen damit. Der Popmusiker Sting erkannte die grosse Qualität des Songs, liess sich Lyrics dazu schreiben und nahm ihn in sein Repertoire auf. Stewy von Wattenwyl arrangiert den Song neu und stellt ihn ins Zentrum seiner neuen CD. Das ist das Wesen von wirklicher World Music, nämlich der Austausch von Einflüssen nicht nur über Kontinental- sondern auch über Stilgrenzen hinweg.
Der Schweizer Pianist Stewy von Wattenwyl ist kein Purist und sucht das innovative Element in eben dieser Verschmelzung. Obwohl seine bisherigen 6 CD-Produktionen in den meisten Geschäften in der "Jazz" - Abteilung zu finden sind (Duke Ellington, der Urvater des Jazz liebte diesen Begriff gar nicht und betrachtete seine Musik von jeher als "melting pot" verschiedenster Einflüsse), könnte Dienda auch im Ressort World Music stehen: Es verarbeitet - auch wenn wiederum der Grossteil des Materials aus dem "Great American Songbook" stammt - Einflüsse aus allen Stilen und Kontinenten und begeistert mit schwärzestem Blues, kochendem Swing, schwebenden Bossa Nova und Latin Grooves, ungeraden Metren, Einflüssen aus Pop und klassischer Musik, Polyrhythmik etc.
Dabei sind nebst Stewy von Wattenwyl und dem Drummer Tobias Friedli (Swiss Jazz Orchestra u.a.) mit den Bassisten Reggie Johnson (u.a Sun Ra, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Keith Jarrett, Kenny Burrell, Monty Alexander) und Daniel Schläppi (Sandro Schneebeli's World Music Group u.a. ) zwei wunderbare Trios am Werk, die einerseits mit "unerhörten" Interpretationen und Arrangements verblüffen, andererseits auch weite Räume für ein Musizieren auf der Basis zeitgenössischer Improvisations- und Interplay-Konzepte zu öffnen und zu nutzen wissen.
Dienda is a beautiful name of an African female. Kenny Kirkland, Wynton Marsalis' highly gifted pianist, who sadly passed away much too early, entitled one of his most stunning compositions Dienda. The famous pop musician Sting acknowledged the qualitiy of this song, added lyrics and put it in his repertoire. Stewy von Wattenwyl rearranges the song and places it in the heart of his new CD. That's the essence of real World Music: The exchange of influences not only over continental but also over stylistic borders.
Swiss pianist Stewy von Wattenwyl is not a purist. He searches for innovation in exactly this interchange. Though his six CD's under his name up to now can be found in most shops in the "Jazz" - corner (Duke Ellington, the master, was hesitant to call his music jazz and considered it always as a melting pot of different influences), Dienda could be situated under World Music : Though the major part of the material is taken from the "Great American Songbook" it gets it's quality from the influences of different styles and continents and takes the listener along on a fascinating journey through dark blues, cooking swing, floating bossa and latin grooves, uneven time signatures, elements from pop and classical music, polyrhythmics etc.
With the drummer Tobias Friedli (Swiss Jazz Orchestra a.o.) and the bassists Reggie Johnson (Sun Ra, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Keith Jarrett, Kenny Burrell, Monty Alexander a.m.o.) and Daniel Schläppi (Sandro Schneebeli's World Music Group a.o.) two wonderful trios can be heard. Who on the one hand amaze with never heard interpretations and arrangements, on the other open wide spaces for contemporary improvisation and interplay concepts.

The recordings, wich have been made during a 5 day engagement in an intimate jazz club are not only an impressive statement of the width of musical expression (cooking swing, floating ballads, driving latin grooves, uneven measures) but also of the concentrated work on stage. Or how Beat Blaser, reviewer at radio DRS 2 says in his linernotes: "... a trio wonderfully attuned to each other, whose attributes include clever arrangements, brilliant solos, exciting interplay and plenty of swing ..." Wenn gesagt wird, dass das Klavier oder die Gitarre an sich die Rolle eines Orchesters übernehmen können, so wird damit gemeint, dass sie unendlich vielseitige Instrumente sind, die – bei entsprechend fachkundiger Bedienung - nicht nur melodisch und harmonisch sondern v.a. auch perkussiv eingesetzt werden können.
Stewy von Wattenwyl und Nick Perrin sind zwei äusserst fachkundige Vertreter ihrer Instrumentalkunst, die mit den Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten ihrer Instrumente mehr als nur vertraut sind. Durch das Gespräch unter vier Augen werden diese Möglichkeiten aber noch um ein Vielfaches potenziert: Hier wird nicht nur intoniert, begleitet und soliert, sondern vielmehr gehaucht und geflüstert, umworben und verführt, vorgeschlagen und gelobt, bejaht und widersprochen, kräftig eingeheizt und auch gedonnert. Obwohl der «Hot Club de Berne» bezüglich seines Namens stilistisch eine Vorliebe für swingenden, bluesigen oder auch traditionellen Jazz suggeriert, spielt sich das phänomenale Duo auf seiner eben eingespielten CD „I Got A Right To Sing The Blues“ mit zeitloser Eleganz und viel Charme diagonal durch die Jazzgeschichte.
Sowohl Stewy Von Wattenwyl wie auch Nick Perrin haben für Brambus in den letzten Jahren schon wunderbare CDs eingespielt, das Backprogramm ist daher ebenfalls nochmals ans Herz gelegt.

If it is said that the piano or the guitar can take over the role of an orchestra, meant is that they are endlessly multilateral instruments which – in correspondingly expert operation – are not only melodic and harmonic but above all also percussive.
Stewy von Wattenwyl and Nick Perrin are two extremely skilled representatives of their instrumental art who are familiar with the expressional possibilities of their instruments! This potential however is magnified by the dialogue between two persons. In this way it is not only possible to accompany, intonate and solo but rather to breathe and whisper, court and entice, suggest and promise, affirm and contradict, put on hard and roll like thunder. Or as the press formulated it:
.. « The Bernese pair passed the musical ideas back and forth like balls and amazed by their own quick reaction. It is clear that such a communion which depends at least as strongly on the empathic recess as from the single-handed virtuoso effort, can only exist on the basis of mutual trust. » … "Bund" 21/2/05
Although with regard to its name the «Hot club de Berne» suggests a preference for swinging, bluesy or also traditional jazz style, the phenomenal duo plays on its recorded CD „I Got A Right To The blues“ diagonally through jazz history, with timeless elegance and much charm.

As I listen to her wonderful performance on her first recording, Time Will Tell, I am just as impressed as I was the very first time I heard her.»

Stewy von Wattenwyl works with Brambus since nearly two decades and has a long list of excellent releases on the label – and he offers new collaborations regularly. This one here is his newest project full of intensity and tactfulness. 2007 was the first concert – occasionally – of Nicole Herzog (Congo-rooted Swiss singer) and Stewy von Wattenwyl. at a jazz-club in Zurich. And the concert was so much fun that they were talking about a CD project the same night. It took five years and many concerts together and another coincidence that the two teamed up again to realize their cd project together with some other of the finest Swiss jazz artists. The result is overwhelming: refreshing vocal-jazz in various ad-hoc formations from duo to quintet, beautiful earthly ballads, and bossas, blues and cooking swing. Magic moments to be recorded in thrilling sound quality.
