Vocal Jazz vom Feinsten - Das "Nadja Stoller Trio" ist ein glückliches Zusammentreffen der Sängerin Nadja Stoller - eine warme, sehr charakteristische Stimme und viel musikalisches Können - mit dem aussergewöhnlich talentierten, jungen Pianisten
Colin Vallon und Thomas Duerst, einem gestandenen Bassisten, der aus der Schweizer Jazzszene schon lange nicht mehr wegzudenken ist. Das organische Zusammenspiel der drei MusikerInnen zeichnet sich aus durch wohltuende Transparenz und Dynamik. Die Möglichkeiten, die ein schlagzeugloses Trio bietet werden voll ausgeschöpft. Wie der Titel der Debut-CD "Once Upon A Summertime" andeutet, geht es der Band darum, musikalische Geschichten zu erzählen. Die abwechslungsreiche Reise durch dreizehn Standards - darunter "rare Perlen", die vorwiegend aus dem instrumentalen Zusammenhang bekannt sind - führt die ZuhörerInnen durch verschiedenartige Gefühlswelten: von nostalgisch-melancholisch bis zu frech und swingend.

Vocal Jazz at its best – the "Nadja Stoller Trio" is the newest member of the brambus jazz family and documents the lucky meeting of the singer Nadja Stoller – a warm and very charismatic voice with a wide musical knowledge – with the outstanding young piano player Colin Vallon and Thomas Duerst, an excellent standup bass player, who could not be missed in the Swiss jazz scene. The organic play of the three musicians has very a nice transperance and a wonderful dynamic. They use all possibilities of a jazz trio without a drummer! As the title of their debut CD "Once Upon A Summertime" promises, it is an aim of the band to tell musical stories. The journey through thirteen standards – including some real rare pearls, so far mainly known in instrumental relations – leads the listeners through various worlds of feeling, from nostalgic and melancholic to swinging and funny. Brambus Records is proud to cooperate with this young trio and the trio can be extensively seen in mid-Europe in 2003.

ZEHN GESCHICHTEN FÜR KOPF, BAUCH UND HERZ
Nach ihrem erfolgreichen Debutalbum „Once Upon A Summertime“ (mit Colin Vallon, Piano und Thomas Dürst, Kontrabass, 2002 Brambus Records) erscheint nun die lang ersehnte zweite CD der Berner Sängerin. Im neuen Repertoire lässt Nadja Stoller die Erfahrungen, die sie im Jazz gesammelt hat, mit der Rückbesinnung auf frühe Inspirationsquellen aus dem Pop-Bereich (eigensinnige Songschreiberinnen wie Rickie Lee Jones oder Jonie Mitchell sind hier an erster Stelle zu nennen) zusammenfließen. Die Schweizerin schlägt damit einen ähnlichen Weg ein wie vor ihr die Skandinavierinnen Sidsel Endresen und Josephine Cronholm. Nadja Stoller ist weder eine typische Jazz- noch eine typische Popsängerin. Am wohlsten fühlt sie sich in der Zone zwischen den klar definierten Stilen. Sechs der Lieder stammen aus der Feder der Sängerin – zarte und dennoch kraftvolle Gebilde, die einem mit ihrer eindringlich melancholischen Färbung einlullen und berühren. Mit ihrem Faible für lyrische Nuancen gelingt Nadja Stoller das Kunststück, die Texte, die sie singt, mit einer Empfindungstiefe und Spannung aufzuladen, die über die Bedeutung der Worte weit hinausgeht – Emotionen werden sublimiert, zuweilen gar transzendiert.
Die vier anderen Stücke – „Of Smiles Remembered“ von Kenny Wheeler, „Without A Word“ von Colin Vallon, „Orbit“ von Chris Moore (dem Bassisten der Nadja Stoller Group) und die herzzerreißende „Ballad Of The Sad Young Men“– vervollständigen die schimmernde Stimmungspalette. Stark geprägt wird der gleichermassen transparente und kompakte Sound der Nadja Stoller Group durch die Präsenz des Cellos, das zuweilen fast wie eine zweite Stimme funktioniert.
Die Band stellt sich auf exemplarische Weise in den Dienst von Nadja Stollers Vorgaben: gemeinsam weben die Musiker an einem vielschichtigen, engmaschigen und geschmeidigen Klangteppich. Hier sind einfühlsame Begleiter am Werk, die wissen, wie man Klänge zu suggestiven Stimmungen verdichtet.

TEN STORIES FOR HEAD, STOMACH AND HEART
After her successful debut album "Once Upon A Summertime" (with Colin Vallon on piano and Thomas Duerst on Contrabass, 2002 Brambus records), comes the Bernese singer's long awaited second album. In the new repertoire, Nadja Stoller lets her experienced jazz knowledge merge with her early sources of inspiration from the Pop genre (unique songwriters such as Rickie Lee Jones or Joni Mitchell being first on her list). With this combination, she creates a path comparable to the Skandinavian Sidsel Endresen and Josephine Cronholm,
which is neither typical jazz nor typical pop. She sounds most comfortable
in the zone between these clearly defined styles.
Six of the songs spring from the singer herself; tender yet strong, they
lullingly touch one with their urgent melancholic colors. With her weakness for lyrical nuances, Nadja Stoller combines the text with depth and excitement far beyond the meaning of the words, and emotions are sublimated and occasionally transcended.
The other four songs, 'Of Smiles Remembered' by Kenny Wheeler, 'Without A Word’ by Colin Vallon, 'Orbit' by Chris Moore (Nadja Stoller Group's bassist), and the heart-breaking 'Ballad of the Sad Young Men' complete the shimmering palette of moods. The clear and compact sound of the Nadja Stoller Group is powerfully shaped by the presence of the cello, which functions occasionally almost as a second voice. The band is exemplary in fulfilling Nadja Stoller's assignments. The perceptive musicians weave a multilayered, precise and supple sound carpet, and know how to thicken every meaningful sentiment.
